Àngel Òdena’s versatility as a performer has led him to sing a wide range of musical styles, from oratorio to vocal symphony to opera. His 1994 operatic debut in La Bohème at the Teatro Petruzelli in Bari was the beginning of a career that now includes performances at such major houses as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Berlin, Teatro Real in Madrid, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Staatsoper Hamburg, Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and Arena di Verona. Òdena’s engagements for the current season include Iago in Otello and Sharpless in Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the title role in Rigoletto at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Peribáñez in La Villana at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Juanillo in El gato montés at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in València, Ford in Falstaff at the Teatre Principal in Palma and Maó, and Enrico in Lucia de Lamermoor with Opéra de Lausanne.
Òdena’s repertoire has included a number of Rossini’s bel canto operas, such as Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Lisbon, Hamburg, Peralada and Valencia, La Cenerentola in Hamburg and Palma, Il Viaggio a Reims in Barcelona (recorded on DVD) and L’Italiana in Algeri in Limoges. Bel canto works by Donizzetti have included l’Elisir d’Amore in Jerez, Hamburg and Barcelona, Anna Bolena in Hamburg (with Edita Gruberova), Maria Stuarda in Barcelona (with Gruberova), Don Pasquale in Palma, La Favorita in Elda, Lucia di Lammermoor in Barcelona and at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Il Duca d’Alba in Oviedo and Roberto Devereux in Madrid.
Classical operas have included Haydn’s L’isoladisabitata in Lisbon, Don Giovanni in La Coruña, and Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Così fan tutte in Barcelona. French operas have included Roméo et Juliette in Sabadell, Faust in Seville, Samson et Dalila in Bologna, Werther in Madrid, Thaïs in Oviedo and Las Palmas, and Carmen in Jerez, Palermo, Toulouse, Cap Roig, San Sebastian, Orange, Málaga, Barcelona and at the Arena di Verona (conducted by Plácido Domingo).
Òdena’s vocal and acting skills are particularly suited to Giacomo Puccini’s operas, having sung Turandot in Hamburg and at the reinauguration of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Madama Butterfly in Hamburg, Seville, Madrid, Lausanne, Florence and Barcelona, La Bohème in Bari, Barcelona, Córdoba and Naples (conducted by Nello Santi), Le Villi in Oviedo and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Il Tabarro in Barcelona and Manon Lescaut in Las Palmas and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has also sung other Verismo classics, including Cavalleria Rusticana in Malaga and Lleida and Pagliacci at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, in Las Palmas and Madrid (edited on DVD at the Teatro Real).
Òdena’s Verdi repertoire has included Falstaff at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, in Bilbao and Barcelona, La Traviata in Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián, El Escorial, Tarragona, and at the Teatro de La Zarzuela (conducted by Alberto Zedda), Un Ballo in Maschera in Oviedo, Simon Boccanegra in Madrid, Berlin and Barcelona, Otello in Palma and Seville, Don Carlos in Seville and El Escorial, Il Trovatore at the Metropolitan Opera, Aida in Barcelona, Macbeth in Córdoba and Lisboa, Attila in Bilbao and Nabucco in Lisboa. His German repertoire has also included Elektra in Toulouse and Seville, Lohengrin in Turin, Barcelona, Bilbao, La Coruña and Salamanca, Das Rheingold in Madrid, Tannhäuser in Oviedo and Tristan und Isolde in Las Palmas. Òdena has performed Wolf Ferrari’s Il Segreto di Susanna (recorded on CD) and Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex in Valencia, Bilbao and Peralada. He has also participated in a CD recording of A. Garcia Abril’s La Integral de Canciones for voice and piano.
Òdena has participated in a series of lyrical compositions by Spanish composers at the Teatro Real in Madrid, including Chapí’s Margarita la Tornera (recorded on CD), Albéniz’s Merlin (on DVD), Bretón’s La Dolores (on DVD), Arrieta’s La conquista di Granata (on CD), Moreno Torroba’s Luisa Fernanda (also interpreted at the Florida Grand Opera) and Alfano’s El Cyrano with Plácido Domingo. Additionally, the baritone has performed Penella’s El gato montés at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Falla’s Atlántida in Granada, Liceu and Valencia with Teresa Berganza, Albéniz’s Pepita Jiménez in Peralada and Montpellier, Sorozábal’s Katiuska in Bilbao and Madrid (on DVD), Rodrigo’s El Hijo Finjido in Madrid, Monsalvatge’s Una voce in off and El gato con botas in Barcelona (on CD), Barbieri’s Pan y Toros in Oviedo, Granados’ Goyescas in Venice and Savonlinna, and Guridi’s El Caserío at the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao. Òdena has sung Giner’s L’Indovina at the Palau de la Música in Valencia, Arrieta’s Marina and Sorozábal’s Juan José at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, and El gato montés in Sevilla, Oviedo and Lisboa. He also recorded a CD of Falla’s La vida breve on Deutsche Grammophon, followed by a concert in Granada and Toulouse.
