Argentine tenor Marcelo Puente has gained widespread recognition as an important lirico-spinto tenor at such theaters as the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Oper Stuttgart, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Hamburg State Opera, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Semperoper Dresden, Canadian Opera Company, Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, State Opera Prague, and several others. In the 2019/20 season, Puente will make his role debut as Pollione in Norma at the Hamburg State Opera, where he will subsequently sing Don José in Carmen. He will also return to the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Calaf in Turandot.
In the 2018/19 season, the tenor made two significant debuts: his debut at the the Opera National de Paris as Cavaradossi in Tosca and his debut at the Washington National Opera in the title role of Faust. He returned to Dresden as Don José in Carmen and Don Alvaro in La Forza del Destino, the latter of which he reprised at the Cologne Opera. Puente also sang Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Hamburg State Opera and will soon appear as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in El Escorial, Spain. In the 2017/18 season, he debuted at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Paolo in Francesca da Rimini, a role which he also sang for his debut at the Opera National du Rhin in Strasbourg. Puente made debuts at the Opernhaus Zürich and Semperoper Dresden as Don Alvaro, sang Don José for his debut with Opera Australia and appeared for the first time at the Vancouver Opera as Calaf in Turandot.
Marcelo Puente studied at the Córdoba Conservatory and Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires. In the 2016/17 season, he made several significant debuts: at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, opposite Ermonela Jaho and conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano, at the Hamburg State Opera and Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels in the same role, at the Canadian Opera Company and Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf as Cavaradossi in Tosca, in North America as Don José in Carmen for the Michigan Opera Theater, and in Japan in concert performances of Carmen under Charles Dutoit with the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo.
Other recent engagements have included Don José in Carmen at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Rodolfo in La boheme with Oper Stuttgart, Manrico in Il Trovatore with Opera Toulon, and the title role in a new production of Verdi’s Don Carlos at the State Opera Prague. Puente has also starred as Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. Other roles in his developing repertoire include Turridu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West, Enzo in La Gioconda, Radames in Aida, and the title role in Andrea Chenier.
